Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a UKVI Account and Applying for an e-Visa

e-visa

If you’re planning to study, work, or move to the UK, one change you need to clearly understand is the shift toward the e-visa system. Over the past couple of years, the UK has been moving away from physical visa documents like BRP cards and visa stickers. Everything is slowly becoming digital.

For many first-time applicants, this creates confusion. I’ve had students ask simple questions like, “Where is my visa stored?” or “What if I don’t get a physical document?” The answer is straightforward once you understand the system, but getting there can feel unfamiliar at first.

I’m Priyajit Debnath, a study abroad counselor at FlyersVisas, and I’ve guided students through both the old system and the newer e-visa process. Once you understand the steps, it’s actually quite structured. Let’s go through it in a clear, practical way.

What Is a UKVI Account and e-Visa

Before getting into the steps, it helps to understand what you’re creating.

A UKVI account is your online profile with UK Visas and Immigration. This is where your immigration status is stored and managed.

Your e-visa is essentially your digital visa record. Instead of carrying a physical document, your visa details are linked to your UKVI account.

Through this account, you can:

  • Check your visa status anytime

  • Share your immigration details using a code

  • Update personal information

  • Apply for new visas or extensions

Once you get used to it, the system is actually quite convenient.

Step 1: Visit the Official UKVI Website

The first step is simple but important.

Always go to the official UK government visa website. Avoid third-party links unless you are absolutely sure they are reliable.

From there, you’ll find the option to create a UKVI account. This is where your e-visa journey begins.

Step 2: Register Your Email Address

You’ll be asked to enter your email address.

A verification code will be sent to your inbox. Once you enter that code, your email gets confirmed.

Use an email that you check regularly. All updates related to your e-visa and visa application will come here.

Step 3: Create a Secure Password

This step is often taken lightly, but it shouldn’t be.

Your UKVI account holds your immigration records, so security matters.

Make sure your password:

  • Includes letters, numbers, and symbols

  • Is not easy to guess

  • Is something you can remember

Losing access to this account can create unnecessary complications later.

Step 4: Enter Your Personal Details

Next, you’ll be asked to fill in your personal information.

This includes your full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, and contact details.

One small mistake here can delay your e-visa process.

I’ve seen cases where students entered slightly different spellings than their passport. It may seem minor, but it can create issues later during verification.

So take your time and match everything exactly with your passport.

Step 5: Verify Your Identity

This is one of the most important steps in the e-visa process.

You’ll need to confirm your identity using one of the following methods:

  • UK Immigration ID Check app

  • Visiting a visa application centre

  • Uploading documents online

Most students now use the mobile app. It allows you to scan your passport and take a photo for verification.

It may feel technical at first, but if you follow the instructions carefully, it’s manageable.

Step 6: Start Your Visa Application

Once your UKVI account is set up and verified, you can begin your visa application.

Depending on your purpose, you may apply for:

  • Student visa

  • Skilled worker visa

  • Visitor visa

  • Graduate visa

You’ll need to fill in details such as your education history, travel history, and purpose of visit.

Answer everything honestly and clearly. Avoid rushing through this part.

Step 7: Upload Supporting Documents

This is where your application becomes more complete.

Typical documents required include:

  • Passport copy

  • CAS letter (for students)

  • Bank statements

  • Academic certificates

  • English test results

Make sure all documents are clear and properly scanned. Blurry or incomplete uploads can cause delays in your e-visa processing.

Step 8: Pay the Visa Fee

After completing your application, you’ll be asked to pay the visa fee.

The amount depends on the type of visa you’re applying for.

In many cases, you’ll also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which gives you access to the UK’s healthcare system.

Payment is usually done online using a debit or credit card.

Step 9: Biometric Appointment (If Required)

Not every applicant needs this step.

If your identity is verified through the mobile app, you may not need to visit a visa centre.

However, some applicants are still required to provide:

  • Fingerprints

  • Photograph

If applicable, you’ll be guided to book an appointment.

Step 10: Receive Your e-Visa

Once your application is approved, your e-visa will be linked to your UKVI account.

You won’t receive a physical visa document in many cases.

Instead, you can log into your account and view your immigration status online.

You can also generate a share code when needed. This allows universities, employers, or landlords to verify your status.

Why the e-Visa System Is Becoming Important

The UK is gradually moving toward a fully digital immigration system.

From what I’ve seen, this shift is mainly for efficiency and security.

Some practical advantages include:

  • No risk of losing physical documents

  • Easy access to visa details anytime

  • Faster verification through share codes

  • Less paperwork overall

It may feel unfamiliar initially, but it simplifies things once you understand how it works.

Common Issues Applicants Face

Even though the process is structured, a few common issues come up regularly.

Some applicants enter incorrect details during registration. Others upload unclear documents or face delays during identity verification.

Another issue is not checking emails regularly and missing important updates.

These are small things, but they can slow down your e-visa process if not handled carefully.

Final Thoughts

Creating a UKVI account and applying for an e-visa is now a key part of moving to the UK, whether for studies or work.

The process itself is not complicated, but it does require attention to detail at each step. Most problems arise when applicants rush or overlook small instructions.

From what I’ve seen, students who stay patient and follow the process step by step usually complete everything without major issues.

I’m Priyajit Debnath, and based on my experience working with students through this transition to the e-visa system, I can say that once you go through it once, it becomes much easier to understand and manage.
